Which Cross Stitch Needle Is Right For You? 🧵

Choosing the right cross stitch needle might seem like a tiny detail—but trust us, it makes a huge difference to your stitching experience.

Before you pick your needle size, you’ll need to know what type of fabric you’re working with. Most cross stitch projects (including all of our kits at Innocent Bones!) are stitched on Aida fabric—a woven fabric with evenly spaced holes that make stitching a dream.

So, how do you match the right needle to your fabric? Let’s break it down.

What Is a Cross Stitch Needle?

The needle used for cross stitch is called a tapestry needle. Unlike standard sewing needles, a tapestry needle has:

  • A blunt tip – so it slides through the holes in your fabric without damaging the threads.

  • A larger eye – perfect for threading thicker strands of embroidery floss (without the rage).

No sharp points. No squinting. No drama. Just smooth stitching.

Why Needle Size Matters

Using the wrong size needle can cause:

  • Broken or frayed thread

  • Extra tension or resistance

  • Tangling and knotting

  • Fabric damage (and rage-quitting your project)

In short? Picking the right needle means easier stitching, cleaner results, and way fewer tantrums.

Matching Needle Size to Aida Count

Aida fabric comes in different counts—which just means the number of holes per inch. The higher the count, the smaller the holes... and the finer your needle needs to be.

Here’s a handy guide to help you choose the right cross stitch needle size:

Aida Fabric Count

Best Needle Size
8 count Size 20
11 count Size 22
14 count Size 24
18 count Size 26

🧠 Top tip: If you're not sure what fabric count you're using, check your kit instructions or product listing.

Don't Worry – We’ve Got You!

In Summary:

  • Use a tapestry needle for all your cross stitch projects.

  • Match your needle size to your fabric count for smooth, tangle-free stitching.

  • All our kits include the correct needle, so you can start stitching right away.

Happy stitching, needle nerds 🖤
